C2.1 - Soil physics
C2.1.1 - Soil structure dynamics
To advance understanding and quantification of soil structure dynamics, in particular interactions between soil structure and biological processes. We welcome contributions based on experimental studies at various scales and field observations, as well as theoretical studies.
C2.1.2 - The role of soil physics in water conservation and food security
In this symposium we like to discuss soil-water-plant relations in the context of food production under limited water availability brining soil scientists from various areas of expertise and backgrounds together (soil and water conservation management, modelling, soil physics, plant sciences, etc.). We aim at stimulating the exchange of ideas on how we could improve crop production in water scarce areas and at the same time protect limited water resources from overexploitation. Also new technological developments in this context could be presented in this session.
C2.2 - Soil chemistry
C2.2.1 - Soil organic matter dynamics from molecules to landscapes
To bring together scientists studying the dynamics of soil organic matter and discuss recent developments with respect to processes governing SOM (de)stabilization and transformation within a wide range of contexts, ranging from climate change to food production to land-use change.
C2.2.2 - Life on the interphase: interactions between soil geochemical and biological traits
To bring together scientists studying and discussing the interactions between soil organisms and their geochemical habitat, and how they affect soil functioning and carbon cycling in a wide range of contexts and at various scales and various depths below the surface.
C2.2.3 - Soil and water pollution: dynamics and evaluation
To bring together scientists studying the dynamics and evolution of soil and water pollution and discuss recent developments with respect to processes governing dynamics of the main pollutants. Not as independent processes, but as components of an integrated whole; including the transfer of pollutants from terrestrial to aquatic systems as well as well as recent advances in treatment of contaminated soil and water.
C2.3 - Soil biology
C2.3.1 - Soil microbiological processes and nutrient cycling
This symposium is intended to discuss how various crop rotation systems influence the soil microbiological processes such as nutrient cycling and greenhouse gas emission by mainly focusing on latest findings about dynamics of microbial communities mediating the processes and also related topics by interdisciplinary approaches including soil chemistry, soil biology and environmental sciences.
C2.3.2 - Molecular techniques as a useful tool to reveal soil biodiversity and biotechnological potential of microbial genomes
The aim of this symposium is to draw attention of the community to genetic diversity of soil and how new biotechnological approaches may be used to exploit it. The symposium will bring researches of several areas such as soil microbiology, ecology, plant geneticists and biochemists to discuss different approaches for exploitation of genetic potential of microorganisms genomes.
C2.3.3 - Rhizosphere mineral dynamics: soil-plant-microorganism
The importance of rhizosphere is well known but the progress in this area is very limited. It is suggested that the breakthrough of technical advance is still required. The objectives of the session are to discuss (1) new methodology, which can be applied to understand this area, and (2) how the mineral dynamics in the rhizosphere is regulated in soils.
C2.4 - Soil mineralogy
C2.4.1 - Dynamic minerals: shifts in soil mineral composition as a result of soil use and management over the human time scale
The objectives of the session are to report and discuss on situation of rapid mineral change. Rapid mineral change is often associated with shifts in physiochemical conditions, such as pH, redox potential, or solute concentration. In particular, papers on mineral composition and abundance shifts in response to changes in soil management are encouraged.
C2.4.2 -New techniques for advanced mineral studies
Expose the future trends in soil mineralogy, including the new advanced techniques which can be used to quantify and describe the crystal-chemical aspects of minerals in soils.
C2.4.3 - Influence of biological process in mineral formation
Important trends in the investigation of the interaction between minerals and soil life, focusing on processes in which the both components are essential (redox process, mineral weathering enhanced by microorganisms, etc.).
C2.5 - Soil chemical, physical and biological interfacial reactions
C2.5.1 - Soil interfacial reactions and their control of biogeochemical cycles
The objective of this session is to explore the effects of soil interface reactions on many soil ecosystem services including climate regulation by carbon sequestration, productivity by nutrient storage and recycling, detoxification by adsorption and microbial breakdown of pollutants. Presentations on any of these aspects will be welcomed, but emphasis must be given on how interactions determine the overall processes.
C2.5.2 - Advances in techniques to investigate soil interfaces to understand interfacial reactions
The aim of this session is to present recent advances in analytic techniques for the study of soil interfaces to a wide audience. These techniques will include NMR, vibrational spectroscopy, fluorescence, mass spectroscopy, (nano) SIMS, analytical pyrolysis and microscopy. There will be emphasis on the limits and advantages of each approach, any inherent artefacts and detection limits.
WG09 Soil Modeling: Challenges and perspectives in soil modelling
Our symposium will bring together modelers and experimental soil scientists at the forefront of new technologies and approaches to characterize soils. By addressing these aims, the symposium will contribute to improve the role of soil modeling as a knowledge dissemination instrument in addressing key global issues and stimulate the development of translational research activities. This symposium will provide a compelling opportunity for this much-needed effort, with a focus on tangible benefits to the scientific and food security communities.
WG10 Hydropedology: Hydropedology and critical zone science: toward systems soil science
1) To highlight the latest development in hydropedology and Critical Zone science, and 2) to promote the development of systems soil science.
